This is because it gives more constant ride. Hence it gives a very smooth ride also allowing good steering control.
On hills, hard conditions and hills, those which are useful, are the V-Bar chains. These are available in 4 and 2 linked spacing. Nevertheless, these are actually less recommended on pavement as it may damage surface. You also have few other options like Super Stud chains. These are a better choice for extreme and harsh conditions. Few brands also offer studs that are robotically welded on each link. This provides the best control to your vehicle.
